LAURAN HIBBERD WHAT DO GIRLS WANT?

Hailing from the British island Isle Of Wight, Lauran Hibberd is beaming her off-kilter indie pop across the English Channel and beyond. Following up on her acclaimed single ‘Call Shotgun’, Hibberd is once again commands our attention with ‘What Do Girls Want?’ While the title will recall anyone’s memory to the Spice Girls’ ‘Wannabe’, with eternal lyrics “what I really, really want” and #GirlPower maxim, this newbie’s songwriting is a far cry from their watered-down pop feminism. Instead, ‘What Do Girls Want?’ is “a good punch to the mouth", as Lauran herself puts it: “It’s sarcastic, and bleakly honest. It highlights what it feels like to be young, and obsesses over the ideas that come with being just that.” Instead of offering up answers like parents and teachers who think they know it all (and really, really don’t), she questions what it is that girls like herself should want in this day and age, with all with the spark, wit and slackerism of acts like Weezer, Courtney Barnett, Zella Donnelly and Zuzu. Simple in its construction, epic in its delivery: ‘What Do Girls Want?’ is outrageously good. - Hannah Thacker
